Everything to Know About Narcan
Narcan® (naloxone) was recently approved on March 29th by the Food and Drug Administration to be sold as an over-the-counter medication (e.g. will no longer require a prescription to access and can be sold outside of a pharmacy). This will significantly increase access for clients, families, and communities and hopefully save countless more lives. It is anticipated that individuals will be able to purchase Narcan® over-the-counter by late summer of 2023. Soon Narcan® will be widely available and so there’s never been a better time to familiarize yourself how this life saving medicine is used. Below you will find a concise single page quick start guide from the manufacturer of Narcan®, and short training video.
ALWAYS CALL 911 IMMEDIATELY
In the event that Narcan® needs to be administered, 911 should be contacted immediately for further emergency medical services. Narcan® only works for about an hour to reverse an overdose before its effects wear off, then the individual could experience a subsequent overdose if enough opioids are still present in his/her system. Narcan® is only the first line of defense! Make sure that you don’t delay and call 911 no matter how the person who you administer Narcan® to thinks that they’re feeling.
